It was established by Pere Ferrer i Bosch in 1889. The company has its registered office located in Sant Sadurni­ d'Anoia, Spain. The company manufactures cava, a natural sparkling wine produced through the same process as champagne from the Champagne region of France. It sells the products Reserva Real, Cuvee D.S., Monastrell Xarel.lo, Trepat, Malvasia, Brut Barroco, Brut Nature, Brut Rosa, Gran Carta Nevada, Carta Nevada, Gran Cordon Negro, Cordon Negro, Extra, Excelencia Brut Reserva, Excelencia Brut Nature, Excelencia Semiseco, and Primer Cuvee under the Freixenet brand. Other offered brands include Segura Viudas, RENE BARBIER, Castellblanch, Canals & Nubiola, Conde de Caralt VIONTA, MORLANDA, VALDUBON, SALA VIVE, GLORIA FERRER, YVON MAU, Fra Guerau, Viento Sur ARERUNGUA and Solar Viejo. It distributes its products in more than 150 countries. The company has become an international wine producer, with wineries in the United States (Gloria Ferrer), Australia (Wingara Wine Group), and France (Yvon Mau in Bordeaux and Henri Abela in the Champagne region), as well as vineyards in Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. The company is also active in Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, and Canada.
